We need to take a moment to look at this scene.
Sherlock Holmes is crying. He is not crying because he is about to die; he knows he’s not. He is crying because he know what his supposed death will do to John. He knows that his death will cause John pain, knows that John saw him as a hero no matter how much he tried to convince him otherwise, knows that it will hurt John to watch the media write him off as a fraud, knows that John will be in worse shape than before they met, and that absolutely kills him.
Sherlock is crying because he knows what he is about to do to his best friend, and that hurting him is the only way he can truly save him.
No one can ever question the depth of Sherlock’s emotions after this episode.
